Abstract
Clinical observations were performed on 103 cases of chest trauma, those were admitted and treated
at the department of Chest Surgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital, during the past 10 years
period, from 1960 to 1970.
1. The ratio of male to female patient of chest trauma was 6 : 1.
2. The most common cause of chest trauma was traffic accident in our series. Thirty-six cases (35%)
were injured by traffic accidents and 25 cases (24.3%) by blunt trauma, 24 cases (23.3%) by stab
wound and nine cases by varying causes.
3. Among 103 cases, 96 cases (93.2%) had non-penetrating injuries, whereas seven cases (6.8%)
were from penetrating injuries.
4. Rib fracture was found in 58 cases (56.3%).
5. Closed thoracotomy was performed for 22 cases (21.4%) and on 19 cases (17.5%), repeated
thoracentesis were carried out.
6. Open thoracotomy was performed on four cases (3%).
7. Overall mortality was 3% (4 cases) and causes of death were posttraumatic shock (1 case),
head injury (2 cases) and asphyxia (1 cases).
